Happy Birthday Dr. Suess!!!!!

Of course, anyone who knows me already knows that I love, love, LOVE Dr. Suess.  With his birthday coming up tomorrow (although technically his actual birthday is February 29th) I thought I'd share some of my Dr. Suess love with all of you.

When I was pregnant with our son Haydn, now 5, we did not find out if he was a girl or a boy during the pregnancy, instead opting for the awesome surprise {which I HIGHLY recommend to anyone who is expecting}.  So my husband and I had to agree on both a girl name and a boy name, and also choose a neutral decor for the nursery.  Since I've always loved Dr. Suess, we decided to go with that, but after searching the web were quite disappointed to find that there really wasn't a lot out there decor-wise for the good Dr.  I happened upon a blog where they had painted Cat in the Hat characters on the wall themselves, and decided that was the route we would take.  After choosing creatures and scenes from some of my favorite Dr. Suess books, I printed them onto transparency sheets and borrowed an overhead projector from my good friend Hazen who happens to be a teacher.  I projected the images onto the wall and outlined them in pencil, and after that the rest was painted by hand.  The gender-neutral nursery worked out perfectly since our daughter Ryann moved into it a short two years after Haydn.  Here is the result:

My absolute FAVORITE Dr. Suess book of all time is The Lorax, {a book I firmly believe all parents should read to their children repeatedly!} so scenes from that cover two walls of the nursery.

The bad old Oncler in his Oncler wagon, checking out the brown bar-ba-loots in their bar-ba-loot suits, humming fish humming, swomee swans and of course the prized Truffula Trees...

This cool little tree is from The Sleep Book (very appropriate for a nursery I thought!), a great bedtime story...

Of course we all know which book these little guys are from....

As well as this dynamic duo...

These next two are also from The Sleep Book...

Earth's best friend, the Lorax.

I figured I may as well throw in the sneak peek pics of the Dr. Suess baby shower I'm making cookies for later this month.  These three were just hand-cut quickie test runs to give an example to the client.  Check back later this month for final pics on the Terri's Treasures Facebook page, as the always creative Terri is styling the shower!

Unique requests & challenges...

I recently received a request from a repeat customer (the best kind!) asking if I could turn some beautiful brooches from Stella & Dot into cookies.  When I opened the picture she sent I was hesitant, but I had tried some techniques in December that involved actually painting the frosting that I thought might work.  So to quote Barney from How I Met Your Mother {love that show}, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!

Creative Collaborations...

One of the best parts of growing my business over the last year has by far been making connections with some amazingly creative women in the party planning world.  In the grand party scheme, I only provide one small aspect (the cookies!), but it is sooooo much fun seeing everything come together.  I don't know how these ladies do it!  I have a hard enough time just getting the all of the food ready at the same time when we have a party here!

Here are a few of the recent shindigs I have been honored to be a part of...

How much do you want one of those little purple drinks?????

For the cookies on this party I had the pleasure of working again with my friend Terri of Terri's Party Treasures.  She incorporated Southern Belle's elegant chandelier and script initial font from the invitation into a cookie image that I was able to use on edible frosting sheets!

Another fun party was another collaboration (one of many, and more to come!) with Terri's Party Treasures.  Only one sneak peak pic for now, as the rest haven't been posted yet :)
Expect more fun pics of parties with Terri as she gets her party planning business ramped up even more.  We are looking forward to more creative, original parties with Terri and all the other fabulous ladies I've had the pleasure of cyber-meeting!

Busy, Busy, Busy...

I finally crack one hundred followers and then I start totally slacking on my blog!  Sorry all, but with Valentines Day and a girls weekend up north thrown in, I just could not find the time to sit much less blog.

So.... to catch up!

I have had quite a busy month so far between orders and networking and giveaways.  If any of you are in the central Illinois area, you may have seen my cookies on the local news the week before the Super Bowl (I'm a celebrity!  LOL!!!).  My friend Heather over at Pirates & Princesses did a spot on WCIA about Super Bowl treats.  Heather whipped up some DELICIOUS  looking cupcakes, and even topped some of them with green tinted coconut {astroturf} and my chocolate covered marshmallow footballs!  All of the awesome printables were from Shindig Parties to Go.

Valentines Day was of course a busy time here with cookie orders, and even some marshmallow requests.  Lots of assortments ordered and I was able to get creative and have fun with them.  Since I was in a crunch for time to pack up and get out of dodge for my girls weekend, I didn't get to take pics of them all, but here is a sampling...

My kitchen ADD also kicked in and I threw a new treat into the mix.  I have a big time salt addition (thankfully I don't have blood pressure issues!).  I have popcorn at least three times a week, the stove-top popped kind covered in nothing but {SALT}.  So when I first started seeing salted caramels on Etsy I thought, now THIS is a treat I could really love.

Say hello to the salted caramels.  These have been described now by three different people as {DANGEROUS}.  For my next trick I think I'm going to combine caramels with another one of my loves..... {COFFEE} !

Are you ready for some football?

Well, ok, so maybe not football, but how about a really great spread of food, maybe some friends and a lot of funny new commercials? YEAH OKAY!!! NOW WE'RE EXCITED!!!

I like football enough to know what some of the positions are, probably name some players, and even understand a few plays (that one really turns my husband on ;) but it doesn't really matter to me who wins on Sunday.  Since my husband throws some money down the toilet every year, ummm, I mean, is a Detroit Lions season ticket holder, I am required to be a Lions fan.  Aside from that, my favorite player is Peyton Manning, not because of his football skills, but because he was really funny when he hosted Saturday Night Live!  So for me, the Super Bowl is strictly a social event.  We usually end up inviting a few friends over for the game and let the all kids have the run of the house while the parents hang out and watch the game and stuff our faces.  As far as I'm concerned, no Super Bowl party is complete without good food.  To be more specific, heart attack-inducing, grease-staining, finger-lickin' good football food.
At my house, of course there will be football cookies and maybe some chocolate covered marshmallows, but there will also be plenty of non-dessert items to snack on.  To keep my husband happy, there will be wings with assorted hot dipping sauces (and some ranch for those who prefer not to kill their taste buds and ruin everything they eat after said wings).

Another tasty finger food we'll be having are Brown Sugar Smokies courtesy of the All Recipes website, one of my go-to sources when I'm looking for fun, new recipes to try.  I mean seriously, who doesn't love bacon-wrapped anything?

Dips are an ever present party staple around here, and a new one I discovered (also from the All Recipes website) and served at our New Years get-together was Roasted Red Pepper Dip.  This is so amazing served with warmed Greek flatbread or na'an bread, but if you don't have those, crackers or tortilla chips will do too!

And since it's probably good to serve a few more vegetables to help wash down the wings, bacon and sausages, I think I'm also going to make a batch of Avocado Salsa.  It's a pleasant change from your standard guacamole.  I've made this one before as well, and have never been disappointed.

Of course, no Dandy Delights post would be complete without COOKIES!!!
